The dimensions and clearances shown for the average adult (Fig. 1) represent minimum requirements for use in planning building layouts and furnishings. If possible, clearances should be increased to allow comportable accommodations for persons larger than average.

Since doorways and passageways must normally be dimensioned to permit the movement of furniture, they should seldom be designed merely on the needs of the average adults.

DIMENSIONS OF CHILDREN

Children do not have the same physical proportions as adults, especially during their early years, and their heights vary greatly, but their space requirements can be approximated from the following Fig. 2.
